My dog has one job, and she is exceptional at it. She sleeps. Eighteen hours a day, in a rotating series of sunny spots around the house, with the confidence of someone who has truly mastered her craft. I used to think she was lazy. Now I think she is the most well-adjusted member of this household. Here is what she knows that I keep forgetting. First, rest is not a reward for finishing your work. It is the fuel that makes the work possible. She naps before the walk, after the walk, and sometimes mid-walk, and she never apologizes for any of it. Second, joy does not need a reason. A sock on the floor, a rustling bag, a squirrel in the garden - each one is met with full-body enthusiasm. She does not save her happiness for special occasions. Every Tuesday is a special occasion. Third, and most importantly: love loudly. When I come home she greets me like I have been gone for a decade, even if I only took out the trash. I am trying to be more like her. More naps, more tail-wagging, more unearned joy. It is working better than any productivity system I have ever tried.
